AVENUE for Traffic Safety created referral centres for road safety and actions for citizens.
AVENUE (Actions for Vulnerable, Elderly, Novice drivers and road Users in Europe – for traffic safety), Road Safety Institute “Panos Mylonas” and 12 partners from 9 EU countries created referral centres for road safety and actions for citizens.
Four types of referral centres for road safety, called NESTs (Networks & Education for Safety in Traffic), were developed: European, national, local and mobile structure. The NESTs further disseminated and implemented work accomplished in previous EU projects, while being at the heart of exchanges about road safety. Guidelines, evaluation and dissemination lead to EU wide implementation afterwards.
Using the NESTs as a foundation, the project organized actions for citizens, putting an emphasis on vulnerable road users, elderly and novice drivers. The creation of courses, interactions, high quality campaigns and events to influenced behavior in a sustainable manner. An active involvement and collaboration of road safety professionals and motivated volunteers ensured the cost effectiveness of the interventions.
The three year project (July 2010 – 2013) was co-funded by DG MOVE of the European Commission.
